…But I‘m pretty darn close to the edge of civilization here in Muskogee, Oklahoma. It turned out to be cheaper to stay in a motel for the run of the fair than it would be to drive back to Texas and pick up our camper, so we‘ve been here for three weeks instead of just one weekend. Sorry guys, I know I owe some of you rp posts and an email or two, but that will have to wait until I get back home. Wireless internet is almost impossible to find in this town. The librarian at the local library says there’s a restaurant near the hospital that has wi fi. If I can’t find it, I’m going to go sit in the hospital parking lot to check my email and post this later this afternoon. Hopefully, I won’t get caught. :D
Anyway, the Castle fair is muchly fun. It’s nice to see all of our friends again. This fair has been getting bigger and bigger each year, and now it seems almost as huge as Michigan. A few years ago the cast members and even the owner would stop by our pushcart to chat in the middle of the day. Now it’s so busy we only see the cast walk by in the parade and we don’t even see the owner at morning meetings. The meetings themselves are a trip. Bureaucracy? At a renaissance fair? Pfft. This feels suspiciously like a real job.
One good thing came out of the silly meetings (8:30 in the morning, bah!). My picture was in the program a couple of years ago, and now I have a stack of the leftover programs. Pretty useless, actually. I have no idea what I’ll do with them, but I guess it’s pretty neat. I feel almost famous.
We spend lots of time at the campground during the week since we’re staying in the type of motel where you need a pair of flip-flops to feel safe taking a shower, and where the cops show up nightly in response to domestic violence calls--not the sort of place where a six year old can play outside. It’s odd living away from the fair. We didn’t bring clay or the kiln, so we can’t work; and I didn’t bring any of the kiddo’s school stuff, so he’s bored and restless whenever we’re at the motel.
On the plus side, I found out about a wireless internet plan that will work almost anywhere. A friend of ours has an antenna/card/doohickey from Sprint that plugs into a usb port on his laptop. It’s only $60 a month after startup, and he has unlimited internet access all over the country. If we do well next weekend, we might sign up for the plan. I think I’d be willing to live on the road full time if we had internet access.
We’ve been talking about staying on the road year round for some time, but I’ve been reluctant because I hated to give up our online business. Also, it’s really hard to do home school without spending too much money when I can’t get free access to worksheets and online books. Having internet access takes away most of my objections. I’ve been talking to people who go to Florida fairs during the winter, and it sounds like this might really work for us. I may even be able to go back to school without having to get a real job!
In any case, we can’t make any plans until we get back home and figure out our vehicle/camper situation. I’ll be back home next week. Hope to see you all then!
