Yeah, this is why I've been so crazy and absent lately:

OCARINAS HOMG )
Dial up users beware. There are lots of pictures that I was too lazy to resize.

We had a beautiful couple of days for the last weekend of the festival: lovely weather, huge crowds, and a Celtic Christmas theme that had everybody in the holiday shopping mood. It was great! I sold out of ocarinas by three o'clock on Sunday afternoon. (Yay for having money to buy a new transmission!) The rest of the day was spent walking around the fair instead of working. I watched a couple of shows that I've been wanting to see for years, and at the end of the day I went up to the arena to see the fireworks show. It is so much more spectacular from the top of the hill than it is through the trees behind the cart.

The end of a show is always a little sad, especially when I know I won't be going on the road again for a while. Today, people are packing up to go to Louisiana and Florida and Arizona. Part of me is just dying to do the same--I'll miss having friends nearby--but mostly I'm just looking forward to staying in one place to rest.

Lately I've been experimenting with anime. I've never been too terribly fond of that style of drawing--much too minimalist? unrealistic?--but I think its growing on me. There's so much expression in each little line.

It is much, much more difficult than it looks.

All of my fooling around has really helped me with carving human figures on the ocarinas. Human figures are HARD, no matter what style you represent them with, but there's something about anime that translates really well to the clay. I'm very happy with some mermaids I carved last week. You can't exactly call them anime, but there's certainly an influence.

I'm almost glad that the ocarina blew up in the firing. That means I get to keep my mermaids instead of selling them.

I mentioned to phyncke that I had been working on ocarinas all day, and she wanted to know what they looked like. I gave her the link to the website and immediately regretted it. That thing hasn't been updated in a looooong time, and most of the designs are atrocious. So, I'm posting these pics just to save my pride.
