Dear internets,
Please stop toppling my heroes from their pedestals. I come to fandom to play with my favorite characters, not to write earnest meta-type essays about being inclusive, playing nice, and the virtues of fluffy unicorns. If you keep this up, I'm going to have to start writing those essays just to keep my self-respect. So just quit already, would you? I really don't need to know which one of my favorite authors might be an insensitive idiot.
I forgave you when you informed me of Robin Hobb's attitude toward fanfiction, though it did ruin the Fool/Fitz relationship for me just a little. Same with Mercedes Lackey and Vanyel, Anne Rice and lovely vampires, and George R.R. and, well...just about everybody. Okay, so I had to suppress the fanfic urge when I read those stories. I could live with that.
I got over the Cassie Clare plagiarism scandal, even though it robbed me of that squeeful moment of rejoicing that a fanfiction author had actually crossed over to the publishing world. It also made me a bit leery of posting my Mortal Instruments fanart, because I didn't want people to think I supported plagiarism. That sucked. But I forgave you because, hey, you gave me porn. That makes up for quite a bit of scandal and wank.
But now, internets, you've gone too far. I love old school Urban Fantasy to bits and bits. Terri Windling's B-town rocks like an heirloom cradle covered with magical purple glitter, and I thought all of its authors would be hailed as awesome forever. To learn that Will Shetterly, of all people, is the latest author in fandom to be covered with FAIL! and SHUNNING! just makes me sad.
I can't even tell if he deserves it. The links are too numerous and some of the posts seem to have been deleted. It LOOKS like he just accidentally outed someone whose name was (apparently) already pretty public, then got all snarky when she requested he take it down. Not very nice of him--no, no, not at all--but not so very evil on the surface. BUT, damn you internets, now I feel like I have to slog through the debate to discover whether or not he did anything really worth FAIL! and SHUNNING! so that I can attack or defend. At least, I'm going to have to do that if I want to talk about Elsewhere and NeverNever when they finally come in the mail. You suck, internets.
It's not that I want to support copyright violation, plagiarism, or malicious outing. It's not that I want to derail the conversations about SFF and race, or that I want to defend someone who's acting badly just because I like his writing. Really, I don't. It's just that I want to participate in fandom without looking over my shoulder in fear of the PC police. So, just stop it, okay? I don't want to write those meta-type essays. Nobody likes an attack of fluffy unicorns.
No love,
Me

jaiden_s just told me that reading this entry made her head hurt. Re-reading it, I can totally see where she's coming from. Editing now, to put it behind a cut.
